50 years since Volvo introduced the P1800

It's been 50 years since Volvo introduced the P1800, and the Swedish automaker has chosen to mark the occasion by releasing a few sketches of what a modern interpretation of the sports coupe would look like. Christopher Benjamin, chief designer with Volvo, just so happens to be a big fan of the P1800 and worked up the sketches as part of a Twitter chat with fans of the brand. Needless to say, the sketches have created a serious stir among the Volvo faithful, but the company has made it clear there are no plans to bring a modernized P1800 to market.

That's a real shame, too. We can imagine such a vehicle would give the Audi A5 a serious run for its money depending on final driveline decisions.

Unfortunately, Volvo is still too busy shoring up its core products to worry about branching off into low-volume niches, at least for the moment. If you like the look of Benjamin's sketches, head over to the Volvo Facebook page to let him know. Source: Autoblog

Volvo XC60 Plug-In Gasoline Hybrid Concept

Volvo has made it a point to emphasize – surprise – the safety of its plug-in vehicles at recent auto shows. Now, at the Detroit Auto Show, the Swedish automaker has showed off the XC60 Plug-In Gasoline Hybrid Concept, a way to gauge American reaction to the idea of a plug-in CUV from Volvo. Why? Because this concept is headed to the U.S. and Chinese markets – in a different guise and with a lot of changes – within "a couple of years." That means something like 2014-2015. Volvo's first PHEV here could be an XC60 model, or perhaps an S60, said Volvo CEO and President Stefan Jacoby. For now, Jacoby tells Autoblog that the XC60 PHEV shows the direction Volvo is headed.

Stefan Jacoby, VolvoHere are the numbers: a 35-mile all-electric range, a recharging time of just 3.5 hours from a 220V outlet (7.5 hours from a more common 110V). Volvo estimates U.S. fuel economy of 105 miles per gallon equivalent and 50 mpg when the battery runs dry. 0-60 is reached in 5.8 seconds on the way to a 130-mph top speed. Oh, and there are eight gears in the auto transmission.

Gasoline is burned in a 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine that is turbocharged and direct-injected and has stop-start technology. This 280-horsepower powerplant moves the front wheels, and a 70-hp electric motor propels the back wheels (this is known as a through-the-road hybrid). The XC60 PHEV has a 12-kWh lithium-ion battery, but just 66 percent of that (8 kWh) is used. The driver can select three modes – Pure, Hybrid and Power – depending on which type of fuel economy and performance is desired. Details of this technology can be found after the jump, and images of the XC60 test bed are available in our galleries. Source: autoblog

Volvo e new S60 TTA touring car

Volvo may not be the first name you'd think of in racing, but it stands as a dominant force in European touring cars. Before stepping up to the World Touring Car Championship last year, Volvo and its partner Polestar Racing had come to dominate the Swedish Touring Car Championship. While that series has since expanded to all of Scandinavia, Volvo made other plans in switching over to the TTA Racing Elite League. And this is the car with which it will be contesting the new series.

Rather than field the same C30 touring car which Volvo and Polestar had fielded in the STCC and WTCC, the TTA racer revealed here is based (or at least looks like) the S60 sedan. Under that carbon fiber body sits a 420-horsepower V6 driving the rear wheels through a six-speed sequential gearbox and boosted by a similar KERS regenerative braking system as employed in Formula One.

The livery has yet to be finalized, so for now Polestar has decked the S60 TTA out in the same shade of baby blue that makes its other touring cars, that 450-horsepower all-wheel-drive C30 prototype and for that matter the Alonso-era Renault F1 cars so perplexingly devious. 2013 Dodge Dart configurator

Members of the Dodge Dart Lovers Club unite: Dodge needs your help pinning down the price and model matrix for the Dodge Dart. As Ford recently did with the 2013 Escape, Dodge has set up a configurator with tentative pricing and options for five trims of the small sedan. According to the automaker, the point is to "provide us with information on how you want to see the all-new Dart," but it's a survey more than a true builder, so "Please note the packaging and pricing information on this site is for survey purposes only."

As of now, the not-finalized price of entry is $17,200 for a Dart SE with the 2.0-liter Tigershark powerplant with 160 horsepower. The standard engine remains the same but the options swell on the next three models: the $19,00 SXT adds things like bigger wheels and keyless entry; the $20,500 Rallye gets a new front fascia and a leather-wrapped steering wheel; the $21,500 Limited installs the 8.4-inch infotainment center and seven-inch reconfigurable dash cluster; and with the top-of-the-mountain, manual transmission, $24,000 R/T you upgrade to the 2.4-liter, 184-horsepower Tigershark engine, bigger wheels and dual exhaust.

The options are plentiful – all trims are offered in manual and automatic, and the 1.4-liter turbo is an engine option on the SXT, Rallye and Limited. Remember, though, some options wouldn't exactly make sense if this were a finalized model. The $19,400 SXT comes with Keyless Entry, but on the $24,000 R/T you have to purchase the $1,400 Technology Group that includes Keyless Entry. Our highly scientific test involved checking every option on an automatic R/T. The result: a $31,050 Dodge Dart.

That's why, as the site says, "The features and prices for the final 2013 Dodge Dart will become available when the vehicle goes on sale in Q2 of 2012. The information on this site may change frequently, so don't be surprised if things look different next time you visit." Head over to the configurator and get cracking, and see all 12 available colors in our gallery below. Source: autoblog
